Yet, most books on debt focus mainly on how to pay it all off, and live forever without it. Too often, following that advice leads only to failure. People either give up, or pay off the wrong kinds of debt. They strand themselves with too little flexibility to survive a financial crisis — and land in bankruptcy court. They neglect saving for retirement, homes, or college, and end up poorer than they might have been. For most people, it’s more realistic — and smarter — to control and manage debt effectively, rather than eliminating it completely. Debt Smart shows how.

Award-winning personal finance columnist Liz Weston explains the rules and explodes the myths surrounding debt. Discover the crucial role debt can play in a portfolio, identifying debts that actually contribute to wealth and flexibility, while avoiding or eliminating “toxic” debts. Weston presents effective strategies for evaluating, monitoring, and paying every form of debt, from credit cards and mortgages to student and auto loans. She offers practical guidelines for how much debt one should take on.Find realistic (and often surprising) guidance on everything from home equity loans and 401K borrowing to small business loans.

The bedrock of his system is simple: work hard, pay what you owe and stay out of debt. His main commandment is “Pay cash.” He first exhorts the reader to take “baby steps,” which are designed to build on each other: first, save $1,000 as an emergency fund; then, pay off all debts from smallest to largest; save a larger three-to-six-month emergency fund; finally, start to save for college and pay off your home mortgage. Ramsey understands the difficulty in putting these steps into action, and therefore packs his book with personal testimonials from everyday people who have used his system and have become debt free, with obvious struggles. The key is what Ramsey calls “Gazelle intensity,” which is to live a financial life the way a gazelle saves itself from an attacking cheetah-”outmaneuver the enemy and run for your life.” While Ramsey provides some helpful charts and graphs so readers can keep track of their efforts to follow his steps, the strength of this book is that it is a straightforward motivational tool. He provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book’s charm.

The real trick to building personal wealth is learning how to transform ‘bad debt’ into ‘good debt.’ This quick-hitting book explains how-without having to cut up credit cards. This is the eighth book in the phenomenally successful Rich Dad series. This book was originally published as an e-book and now joins the Rich Dad series in trade paperback format.

Kiyosaki wrote this book as the eighth installment of his Rich Dad Series. The book serves to constantly remind us that the key to increasing our chances of becoming wealthy requires the willingness to the pay the price. Discussing all the get rich schemes, such as game shows or playing the lottery, Kiyosaki writes, “There are better ways to become rich, with much better odds, but most people are not willing to pay the price” (x). The price to pay is the time and money you spend investing in your financial intelligence.

Kiyosaki recalls a truism once observed by Rich Dad, “The only people who think life should be easy are lazy people” (3). Kiyosaki rejects frugality as the best way toward becoming rich. Instead he recommends paying the price for higher financial intelligence, “…another way to become a millionaire is to improve your financial literacy, your financial intelligence, and be willing to be accountable to yourself, your results, your continuing education, and your personal development in becoming a better human being…that was a price I was willing to pay to become a millionaire” (81). Adopting such a mindset becomes tantamount to swimming against the current. Possessing faith and the fortitude to dedicate your life to accumulating wealth in this manner is crucial to overcome such naysayers as friends and family.

About the Author
Robert Kiyosaki founded an international financial education company and invented the board game Cashflow. Sharon Lechter is an accountant who now focuses her efforts on creating educational tools for anyone wishing to better their financial education.
